| Description: |
Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, better known as Sandro Botticelli "little barrel" b. 1 March 1445 d. 17 May 1510, was an Italian painter of the Florentine school during the Early Renaissance (Quattrocento).
Less than a hundred years later, this movement, under the patronage of Lorenzo de' Medici, was characterized by Giorgio Vasari as a "golden age".
Sandro was intensely religious. In later life, he was one of Savonarola's followers and burnt his own paintings on pagan themes in the notorious "Bonfire of the Vanities".
